Rays hand game over to Twins
James Shields wasn’t his best, but he wasn’t his worst, either. The Rays again let down their fans and themselves losing to the Twins 6-5 in Minnesota. The game could have been won by the Rays, but another day of poor mental baseball and another shaky performance by Dan Wheeler sealed the deal for the Twins.
The Daily Turn:
6 Jason Bartlett.
I was really optimistic about this kid, and am still trying to be, but he yet again he played the goat letting two runs score on another throwing error in the 5th inning. What would have been the third out and kept the game tied at 3 turned into a short throw(severely short) that skipped past Pena at first and allowed two runs to score. That is Bartlett’s third error of the young season, and he doesn’t help his cause by continuing to be weak at the plate. Bartlett legged out an infield single in the 9th last night, but is hitting .196 on the year.
4 B.J. Upton
He drives me crazy. I want so badly to be a fan of his, especially when I see his sweet stroke at the dish. He has been hitting well, but for everything good he does at the plate, he seems to find a way to offset it in the field or on the base paths. Upton’s mental lapse(again!!) in throwing home instead of to second put a runner in scoring position who would later score. Upton has to realize that he is not going to throw everyone out at the plate, and his main concern should be keeping that trailing runner at first and out of scoring position. BJ was also throw out trying to steal second…for the third time. His stolen base percentage is 57.1%. Lately he has run us out of more innings than he has helped us at the plate. Joe Maddon says Upton has a green light to run when he wants…maybe he should have a yellow light for a while?
3 Shawn Riggins
Yet again he failed to keep up with the secondary play on the field and allowed a runner to take third base while he was slow to realize what was happening. This is the second time Riggins hasn’t been using his head on the field, and he needs to realize the this is the Majors, players take extra bases, he needs to pay attention for 9 whole innings, even when he “assumes” the play is over. He did hit a game tying HR to redeem himself, though.
Quote of the Day:
“It wasn’t one of our better games.”
-Joe Maddon on last night’s game.
Really Joe? Because it is starting to look pretty typical.
